Foundation vs Slab

We are often asked if we do foundations. The short answer is no. We do concrete slabs, or "slab on grade".  What is the difference between foundations and slabs?

The terms "foundation" and "slab" are often used in the context of building and construction, but they refer to different things, each serving its own specific purpose in a structure.

1. Foundation:

  • Purpose: The foundation of a building is a critical component that transfers the load of the structure to the ground. It ensures stability and prevents settling or movement that could damage the building. Foundations are designed to cope with both the load of the building and any external forces such as weather, seismic activity, or soil movement.
  • Types: Foundations come in various types, including shallow foundations (like pad or strip foundations) and deep foundations (like piles and caissons). The choice of foundation type depends on several factors, including soil type, load requirements, and environmental conditions.
  • Materials: Foundations are typically made of durable materials like concrete, steel, or masonry. They need to withstand environmental pressures and support the weight of the entire structure for its lifetime.

2. Slab:

  • Specific Type: A slab is actually a type of foundation, more specifically known as a "slab-on-grade" or "concrete slab" foundation. It is a flat, horizontal concrete layer that serves as both the foundation and the floor of a building.
  • Use: Slabs are commonly used in areas where the ground doesn't freeze, making them suitable for warmer climates where frost heave is not a concern. They are often used in residential construction, particularly for single-story buildings.
  • Construction: Constructing a slab involves preparing the ground, laying down a gravel base for drainage, installing a vapor barrier, and then pouring and finishing a layer of concrete, usually reinforced with steel bars (rebar) or wire mesh.

So while all slabs can be considered a type of foundation, not all foundations are slabs. Foundations are a broader category that include various structural elements that connect a building to the ground and distribute its weight. A slab is a specific kind of foundation, notable for its flat, single-layer construction, often used in certain climates and building types.

Choosing Concrete Slabs for Shops or Carports

There is a reason concrete is used for shop floors and carports. Stability, durability, and versatility. Whether your shop floor is small or large, Eh-Team Concrete Contractors have the skill and experience to ensure your shop floor is flat and accurately measured in depth and area.

If you have a carport or are adding a carport, having a concrete foundation is a better option than gravel, dirt, or grass. It provides stability to your structure and it is far easier to walk on - especially if your dirt/gravel driveway is rutted!  Concrete carports also have a far more finished look, adding curb appeal to your home.  If you check out our project gallery, you will see the perfect example of a rutted gravel carport turned into a beautiful finished concrete driveway.
